Online Education Is Increasingly the First Choice for Adults
Online education has reached milestones that very few thought imaginable. Fear of letting go of the traditional university model kept some skeptics away. Fear of the unknown made some people doubtful. How would online education work? Was it credible or another diploma mill scam? Was it really possible to get a legitimate degree online?
Today, over 1.5 million individuals in the U.S. are enrolled in online degree programs. Going to school online has become widely popular because it fits into the busy lives of adult learners. They can still spend time with their families, work full-time and get the degrees they have always wanted. Employers are accepting online degrees and are focusing less on what type of college or university degrees come from.
Many critics said Western Governors University (www.wgu.edu), the first competency-based, fully accredited online university, was destined for failure. Recently, however, WGU has reached a milestone that has made the founders dream come true: 10,000 students. When 19 U.S Governors founded WGU more than 10 years ago, many predicted a non-profit university couldn‘t survive without state financing and would be put out of business by the for-profit universities. But with 10,000 students, WGU isn‘t showing any sign of slowing down and continues to grow rapidly with students in all 50 states.
WGU has made a name for itself in the online world. In April 2008, The United States Distance Learning Association awarded WGU with the 21st Century Award for Best Practices in Distance Learning. In recent years numerous programs at WGU have been designated as a "Best Buy" by GetEducated.com, a highly regarded U.S. clearinghouse that ranks accredited online degree programs. The WGU Teachers College is the only online teacher education school having earned accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Online education is on the rise and more programs are becoming available to online students. For example, teachers are getting certified online and nurses can expand their licensure into a degree. People enjoy the freedom they get with online learning and the flexibility to attend school on their own schedule. After all, there is nothing like going to school in your pajamas.
